| One-by-One Mentoring |
| |
One-by-One exists to provide individual, academic tutoring to at-risk inner-city children. The program is designed to help fight illiteracy and thereby reduce poverty. It also seeks to help build positive moral character in future leaders through the positive relationships and modeling of the tutor/mentors. Those involved as tutors are encouraged to see themselves as friend first and teacher second. The ultimate goal is to tutor and mentor in the spirit of Christ.

Dear Carol
I am writing to thank you for your great service to children in our classes at Holland School. Your One by One Tutoring Program is unique and high quality. It is the only program I have seen in my 31 years of teaching in Mpls Public Schools in which the students are transported to their tutoring sessions by the volunteers. While I am sure that requires extra diligence in your volunteer supervision, it has meant successfully reaching many students with great needs, who otherwise would not receive help.
Another aspect that is superb is the consistency and reliability of your volunteers. My students, especially Teirra, LeShauna and Courtney too until she moved away, talked often of going to tutoring. The volunteers regularly emailed me, and their weekly reports in our staff mailboxes were a great touch. It encouraged me as teacher to know that I was not alone in trying to allow these kids to reach their potential.
I encourage you to keep on with your good work, as I lay down my pencil and head to North Carolina for a new career as yet unknown.
